Extra Credit- Blog 3.5


Purplemath is website that is based around forums for students to come get help on a variety of math subjects that are taught in elementary, middle school, high school, and some college. Not only do they have forums that students can ask questions on, but they also provide practice quizzes and practice worksheets to really tone up math skills. Each topic comes with a guided video as well so students can visually see the concepts come to life. However, to get many of the advance features like guided videos and worksheets users must create an account and pay a fee. The basic services such as explanations on concepts and definitions are free for all users.

Skills students need to navigate:
·       Read and interpret printed text
·       Read and interpret mathematical symbols
·       Know basic elementary math
·       Knowledge of basic computer use (younger children needs supervision)
This resource would be developmentally age appropriate because it offers a variety of ways to teach lessons that are taught in that age range. Also, since this site offers past elementary level material students can use that to their advantage to get ahead on their learning. However, since there are very little on things for k-2 pupils to use, some material might need adjustment before use.

These adjustments might include simplifying the quizzes and content to better fit the younger age group. However, if the pupil is already skilled with k-2 stuff they can easily use this site to jump ahead on what they need to know for the future.



Mathisfun is a free online website that provides games, worksheet, math dictionary, activities, handouts, and puzzles. As you can see there are a lot of interactive content that kids can use to learn certain concepts, but they also have material that kids can directly learn from. The game topics that students can chose from range from algebra to geometry and also have different levels that students can chose from. There are games that combine colors with numbers to enhance the students learning experience. An example of one of the various worksheets that is provided on this site is a worksheet that is based off of the concept of multiplication. On this worksheet students can fill in a multiplication table that can also be used as another resource in future assignments.

This site is very age appropriate and accommodates topics that k-6th graders can utilize. It offers a variety of methods of learning that not many sites offers, like hands on coloring that teaches about numbers. Since it offers a lot of material on the fundamentals of math like basic counting and adding it can definitely be used for the upper tier students to get a strong foundation in their math career.

This site is ideal for teachers to use for classes because they have a variety of projects and activities that students can work on together. Since there are a variety of options to choose from students will stay engaged in learning the material. Individual students can also use this site as extra practice.

Mathplayground.com is a free online website for kids that are in the k-6th grade level. It offers a unique way of teaching pupils concepts that are taught in school by offering arcade style games to engage the kids. Besides that they offer word problems that gives students a more applied way of learning math and videos to help enforce key fundamental skills that are needed in the future. They not only make this a site where students can go to for concept help, but also a place where students can tone up their thinking skills by offering a variety of logic games that apply math and English.

This is an ideal site where students that are in grade k-6th can come to learn math in a different perspective. This site makes many of the concepts easy to understand by presenting them in forms of videos and games, which make this very appropriate for this age group.

Some of the concepts and material are not easy to navigate around so younger pupils might need help of a supervisor or an adult to find the right level material. This site most likely cannot be used in a classroom environment however it is ideal for at-home practice. This is a good way for parents to introduce a fun way of reinforcing the material, so it might be a good idea for them to bookmark this website to reference when their child has free time.


123techs4me.com is a free online website that has many different tools for a variety of academic areas that range from science to music, and of course math. The math section of this website is very easy to navigate and offers labeled levels on each of the things it offers. Some examples are counting activities with bugs and beads, counting money, fractions and much more. Once you click on the desired topic and/or activity it takes the user to an interactive game on the topic. Some of the activities also offer more link specific for the topic to really drill in the key skills. Although most of the topics offer games, some lead to easy to follow, step-by-step lessons on some of the material like fractions.

This website is appropriate for students ages k-6th however, limited material is available for grades 5-6th. They offer an alternative link that takes you to a different website for more of the upper level material. This site can be used by the older students to review the material as well as understanding the basic concepts of math better.

This is not an ideal website for teachers to use because it is mostly individual based work. However teachers can refer to this as extra practice for their pupils on the subjects that they taught in class. Parents and students can also come to this website to better understand the material that is being taught in class.

  2. Hi, I think you did an awesome job with the reviews. I like how detailed they were. I looked at some of the website I didn’t know of before like http://www.mathplayground.com/ and http://www.123techs4me.com/mathmatics.cfm and thought they were great for kids to learn from.
